Bulldog ‘Mayor of Haight Street’ passes away

When a public figure dies, we take a moment to remember. In death, we find kind sentiments even for the mediocre ones. But for a good, noble, furry one, there’s nothing but positive things to say.

Jake Wilson, an English bulldog and fixture of the area, passed away last week at the ripe old age of 12. Known as “The Mayor of Haight Street,” he earned his title sitting outside Blade Runners Hair Studio, entertaining passersby.

Mike Kepka, photographer and writer of the blog “The City Exposed” at SFGate, remembered him with a piece and a collection of photos from the time he spent with Jake last September. He remembered him this way:

“His death has left an oversized vacancy at his curbside post. But like so many San Francisco traditions, Jake is not wholly gone — immortalized in the film of countless tourists.”

Rest in peace, Mayor Wilson. You will be missed by many.
