49ers roll dice on Randy Moss

Jim Harbaugh threw passes to Randy Moss during a tryout, and then Trent Baalke tossed him a contract.

The 35-year-old Moss is the latest retired one-time diva superstar to come to the Bay Area looking for one last shot at glory.

Maybe he and Manny Ramirez can compare comebacks at the end of the year.

The 49ers brought Moss in for a tryout on Monday, in which Harbaugh stepped in to throw Moss passes. Players under contract are not allowed to report to team facilities until Tuesday afternoon, which pressed Harbaugh into duty.

It’s widely known that the 49ers are in desperate need of wide receivers, but a used-up retread with a history of trouble is hardly what 49er fans had in mind.

Moss was once an elite level wideout, but he spent 2010 jumping between three teams. New England traded him to Minnesota after four games, Minnesota waived him after another eight games, Tennessee signed him and decided not to resign him after the season.

And in case you forgot, during his first stint with the Vikings, after catching a touchdown in Lambeau Field against the Packers, he celebrated by mimicking mooning the Packers fans. He’s a class-act all the way.

Harbaugh and Baalke better hope that Moss doesn’t start pointing fingers when the ball doesn’t come his way enough, otherwise this move could compromise everything the 49ers are building.
