Big Al’s pulls out of porn business

Shoppers will be shocked when they head to Big Al’s Porn Superstore for some tantalizing toys or Jenna Jameson DVDs, only to find this place now only sells bananas and sausages.

Gone are the days of viewing booths and sex toys. North Beach’s infamous Big Al’s has been transformed into a grocery store. The new name: Big Al’s Cheez N Bologna.

Big Al’s sexy reign came to an end last year when the store sold its last whip and ball gag. Insert nearby liquor store owner,  Khaldoun Alsati, who took the closure as the perfect time to open his new grocery store.

Alsati says despite months of renovations, strippers from the neighborhood still come in asking for the store to stock their scandalous uniforms:

“The girls are asking me if I can carry the high shoes and the outfits they wear for dancing.”

It’s no surprise people still think the store sells vibrators instead of hot dogs, considering Alsati kept the famous Big Al’s sign with its giant Tommy gun-wielding mobster. And Alsati isn’t totally against to the idea. He’s thinking about stocking a few clothes and accessories for the neighborhood’s working girls.

Big Al’s has had its share of porn history erupting around it over the years. Its next-door neighbor, the Condor Club, was where 60s erotic dancer Carol Doda famously became one of the first topless dancers in The City.

While a grocery store surrounded by a plethora of porn stores and strip clubs might sound weird, local businesses say the area badly needed a grocery store. Nader Marvi runs a neighborhood business collective called the Voice of Broadway and commented on the new store:

“What we need is more foot traffic during the day. Broadway is dead during the day.”

Marvi thinks the store can be successful “as long as they wash all the walls before they sell all the groceries.”
