If you’ve been anywhere on Mission Street, you’ve probably noticed some pretty extreme potholes and cracks littering the pavement.
You’ll be happy to know that Mission, along with 24th, Folsom, and 17th streets will all be getting a makeover in the coming months.
San Francisco’s Department of Public Works (DPW) announced the major road work plans at a recent community meeting. The beautification process will include repaving Mission from 16th Street to Cesar Chavez Street while the Public Utilities Commission replaces water mains between 17th and 21st streets, and PG&E replaces old gas pipes from 20th to Cesar Chavez.
The City uses a scoring system to rate the quality of their streets. Out of a possible 100, Mission gets a menial 45, while the rest of the city does a bit better with a mediocre 63.
While the roadwork is welcomed by many, it worries local businesses because the plans include some trenching and a temporary removal of parking, But Alex Murillo of the DPW said:
“Our work is going to be phased to maintain as much street parking as possible; however, temporary removal of street parking on a block is necessary to complete the work and maintain the traffic lanes. We will restore street parking as soon as possible. DPW and the contractor are fully aware of that concern and will do everything within our power to minimize any impact. ”
The City plans to start work along Mission Street in March and expects it to last six months.
In addition to Mission Street improvements, this summer Folsom Street will also be receiving a major overhaul complete with traffic signal upgrades, resurfacing, pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, and 44 new trees.
