Mission Impossible: Slow down the Saints

If the 49ers are going to advance to the NFL Championship game, they are going to have to do something the Vikings, Falcons, Panthers and Lions haven’t been able to do over the last four weeks: keep the Saints under 40 points.

The Who Dat Saints dispatched of the Detroit Lions 45-28 on Saturday night, setting up a huge showdown in Candlestick Park next Saturday.

The 49ers stingy defense will attempt to slow down a Saints high-flying offense that put up 626 yards of total offense against the Lions. Drew Brees accounted for 466 of those yards.

The 49ers’ secondary will face their stiffest test of the season. Brees is the hottest quarterback in the league right now, and has thrown for over 300 yards in eight straight games – including the win over the Lions.

The 49ers are not built to win a shoot-out with Brees. Not many teams are. This is clearly going to be the best team the Niners have faced all season. If they can get by the Saints, they will have undoubtedly earned their spot in the conference championship game.
