Warriors, City brewing plans for S.F. arena

When Mayor Ed Lee, Giants CEO Larry Baer and Warriors owner Joe Lacob get together in the same room to “discuss the feasibility” of a state-of-the-art Warriors arena near AT&T Park, you can bet The Idea has got some legs.

The Idea is a 20,000 seat, state-of-the-art (would it ever not be?) multipurpose arena across McCovey Cove from AT&T Park, ready for the 2017-18 NBA season. With public transit in place and  a parking garage in the works, China Basin’s infrastructure is hard to match.

Lacob told the Chron “the potential for building an arena near AT&T Park is very exciting.” Like yeah. You better believe downtown San Francisco floats a little more boat for Lacob than the shadow of Mt. Davis the team now calls home.

Lee reportedly broke the seal on the talks, reaching out to the teams to set up a meeting. And he’s not masking his intent either:

“This is a great opportunity for San Francisco, and I’m going to make sure the Warriors know that we are ready to welcome them back home.”
