Crazy weekend stings for Stanford

Ah, what could have been. With four teams in the BCS top 10 losing this weekend, including Oregon, Stanford’s failure to roast the Ducks last week looms even larger.

If the Cardinal had beaten Oregon last week, even their less-than-dominant 31-28 victory over Cal in Saturday’s Big Game would have left them as one of only two major unbeaten programs. As it stands, Stanford has basically no chance at a national championship, despite being locked in a pack of one-loss major programs near the top of the BCS rankings.

The nuttiness began Friday night, when No. 2 Oklahoma State lost 37-31 in OT to Iowa State. Then on Saturday, No. 5 Oklahoma got beat 45-38 by scrappy Baylor, and No. 4 Oregon was shocked at home by USC, 38-35.

So once again, chaos reigns in the hunt for the national championship. When the BCS top ten comes out Sunday afternoon, Nick Saban and the 10-1 Alabama should have the inside track at a rematch with LSU in the Jan. 9 title game.
