City may expand plastic bag ban

Dimes and quarters. That’s what City grocery and retail shoppers would fork up if new plastic bag ban legislation is approved.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports City supervisors will vote on a plan that would require shoppers to pay 10 cents per bag provided by the store at checkout starting July 1. The fee could increase to 25 cents per bag two years later.

Stores that don’t comply with the law would be fined $100 for the first infraction, $200 for the second and $500 each time after that.

Legislation is sponsored by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and is considered his final act before being sworn in as the City’s newly elected sheriff in January.
