The Baseball Writers’ Association of America revealed their AL & NL Rookies of the Year today, and surprisingly, A’s second baseman Jemile Weeks was left off all 28 ballots in the American League.
Tampa Bay Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson won the AL award, receiving 17 first-place votes. He beat out Angels first baseman Mark Trumbo. Braves closer Craig Kimbrel took home the NL prize.
The fact that Weeks didn’t receive a single vote speaks to the depth of the rookie class in the American League. Five players received at least one first-place vote.
But the season Weeks put together deserved some recognition. In 97 games, he hit .303, the only player on the A’s roster to hit over .300. He also led the team with eight triples and stole 22 bases.
10 days ago, it was reported that the A’s would listen to trade offers for everyone on their roster except Weeks. That speaks highly of what the A’s think of their speedy second baseman. The beat writers may not have recognized Weeks, but the A’s know that they have a franchise player, and maybe that’s more valuable at the end of the day.
