Local crab season begins next week

Get the butter. Get the lemon. Ready, set…craccccck!

The promise of sweet, sweet Dungeness crab is just around the bend, as news arrives today that the local commercial crab season will commence on Tuesday.

However, we may have to share our Bay bounty with northern fishing boats from California, Oregon and Washington, that have post-poned their season by two weeks to give their own crabs time to grow larger and more succulent.

(Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard.)

With more boats in the Bay, it could mean a quick and mean scurry for local crabs during the next couple weeks, said Zeke Grader, executive director of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fisherman’s Associations.

Currently, Graders said local fisherman and buyers are in final negotiations for this year’s booty, and a settlement should be reached in the next few days.
